Blogtober 2022 Day 7: Book-Line Poetry

6:00:00 PM

Hi hello ghouls and goblins and welcome to day 7 of Blogtober 2022! Today, I'll be doing some very fun book line poetry, which was created by Jemma from Fantastic Books. Unfortunately, her blog is no longer active which means I can't link the original post, but I'll be including the instructions in my post below in case you want to do some book poetry yourself! Let's get spooky!

Jemma's instructions for the book line poetry start with picking your favorite book. You then take the blurb of the book and take either the first word of the first three sentences or close your eyes and pick three words at random and these three words become the title of your poem. For my book choice, I went with Sundial by Catriona Ward which is probably my favorite book of 2022. If you're interested, I have a full review for the book here that I did as part of a book tour back in  Let's check out the blurb for Sundial and see what our book-line poem title could be.

You can't escape what's in your blood...

All Rob wanted was a normal life. She almost got it, too: a husband, two kids, a nice house in the suburbs. But Rob fears for her oldest daughter, Callie, who collects tiny bones and whispers to imaginary friends. Rob sees a darkness in Callie, one that reminds her too much of the family she left behind. She decides to take Callie back to her childhood home, to Sundial, deep in the Mojave Desert. And there she will have to make a terrible choice. Callie is worried about her mother. Rob has begun to look at her strangely, and speaks of past secrets. And Callie fears that only one of them will leave Sundial alive. The mother and daughter embark on a dark, desert journey to the past in the hopes of redeeming their future.

Going by choosing the first word of the first three sentences, I got All, She, and But which...is not really a title at all, is it? So I guess it's time for me to close my eyes and pick three words at random, hopefully landing on three words that will make some form of sense. Let's try it again!

This time around was much more successful! I got blood, whispers, and desert which can definitely be turned into a pretty creepy title. Why don’t we go with Blood Whispers in the Desert? For the next step, you use your birthday to determine the pages you'll use to get the words for your poem. If the page you have chosen is blank, take the next closest page with words! Take any of the words in any order you wish and use them to create your poem.

Blood Whispers in the Desert

Tonight is sacrifice
Only the stars look down on us here
I can smell their bodies
They existed once and now they’re all gone
Their bodies are as red as blood
Maybe they only live in our imagination now
I screamed and ran

She’s still here
I can’t stop thinking

I burn with rage inside
I want to ignore it
I can't stop thinking

I have secrets
It can be terrifying
I can’t stop thinking

To hell with it

The scream came again
Like a needle in my head
A dull ache
The loss feels like physical pain
I can’t seem to feel anything

And that does it for my book-line poetry! I did this for Blogtober 2019 with Vicious by V.E. Schwab and I really loved what I came up with. If you'd like to check out that post, I'll link it here! I always have fun trying to come up with some spooky poems so this is a prompt that I definitely enjoy doing. If you end up making some book-line poetry, I'd love to see it so be sure to link your poem or post it in the comments below. Tomorrow is day 8 and I'll be sharing a spooky book review so make sure to come back and see what horrors are in store! Thanks for stopping by and I'll scare ya later!
