Title: Dead Silence
Author: S.A. Barnes
Pages: 352
Genre: Horror/Science Fiction
Release Date: 08 February 2022

From Goodreads: "Claire Kovalik is days away from being unemployed—made obsolete—when her beacon repair crew picks up a strange distress signal. With nothing to lose and no desire to return to Earth, Claire and her team decide to investigate. What they find at the other end of the signal is a shock: the Aurora, a famous luxury space-liner that vanished on its maiden tour of the solar system more than twenty years ago. A salvage claim like this could set Claire and her crew up for life. But a quick trip through the Aurora reveals something isn’t right. Whispers in the dark. Flickers of movement. Words scrawled in blood. Claire must fight to hold onto her sanity and find out what really happened on the Aurora before she and her crew meet the same ghastly fate."

Dead Silence is pitched as Titanic meets The Shining and if the cover didn't immediately hook me, then that comparison absolutely did. This also made me think of the horror movie Ghost Ship but put it in space and that just made me love it more. I am all for any and everything space-related and horror but mash them together? Absolutely. This book took me on a spooky ride and had me literally scrunching my feet up in the bed while reading at night just in case something was going to reach out and grab my feet. This book was one of my most anticipated releases of 2022 and it definitely did not disappoint!

Plot:
Days away from being taken from the stars and put on a boring desk job, Claire Kovalik and her beacon repair crew come across a strange distress signal in the far reaches of space. Deciding that she has nothing to lose anyway (and with no desire to return to Earth and be put out of a job), Claire and her crew make the decision to investigate. How bad can it be, right? On the other end of the old distress signal lies the Aurora, a famous luxury space-liner that vanished more than twenty years ago on its maiden voyage. No one knows what happened but one thing's for sure: claiming the ship for salvage could set up Claire and her crew for life. But the Aurora isn't just a dead ship floating in space. Something happened twenty years ago to cause the ship to vanish, and it's still lurking in the halls of the Aurora. Impossible whispers, movement around corners and down hallways, and words scrawled in blood along the walls are only a taste of what Claire and her crew discover. Can they hold on to their sanity long enough to uncover the past, or will they succumb to the same fate of the passengers of the Aurora?

I said it above but I am an absolute sucker for things set in space, and it's not a secret that I enjoy all things horror, which makes
Dead Silence the perfect mashup for me as a reader! I really loved the concept of a mysterious disappearing ship that a small group of people discover and then find out that something is really not right with it and this book delivered and then some. There were times when I had no idea where the story was going and following it through all of the twists and turns was such a wild ride. One thing I do wish the plot did was to focus more on Claire and her crew as they explored the Aurora, but at the same time, I really enjoyed the dual timelines because it gave the story so much more freedom to allow the reader to dive deeper into the mystery of the ship. There was a great balance of mystery and horror with some great twists and character development that really propelled the story forward into a finale that I was not expecting!

Characters
:
Claire Kovalik is our main character and man is she one hell of a main character! I was so invested in her story, especially when there were hints every so often about things that happened in her past. I really enjoyed seeing her growth from the start of the book where she’s depressed and ready to step out into the emptiness of space because she’s about to lose her job, to the end where she’s fighting to stay alive because she’s realized that she doesn’t want her life to be over. You get so much growth from her as the book goes on and it was so wonderful seeing her confront her past traumas as she was experiencing the horrors of the Aurora. I really enjoyed seeing her progress from who she was at the start to the Team Leader that she became by the end of the book. She may not have always made the best decisions, but would you be calm and clear-headed on a haunted spaceship that has blood all over the walls? Yeah, neither would I.

I also really enjoyed the side characters, especially Kane. I'm a sucker for the "main character is closed off to everyone but has a soft spot for one specific person but won't reveal their feelings" trope and that was exactly what Claire and Kane were.

"Kane makes me feel like somebody. He makes me feel. Jesus. Is there anything more powerful, more dangerous than that?"

Voller was definitely the comedic asshole of the crew and despite him being a jerk most of the time, I did enjoy having him there to kind of break the tension that was hanging over them throughout their time in the Aurora. Nothing like having someone make a terrible joke after seeing the ghost of your dead friend, am I right? Lourdes was super wholesome and I really wanted to protect her whenever she was on the page. Something about her was just so sweet and I really liked how she brought a little light to a dark situation! And sweet Nysus, the tech-savvy sweetheart, was such a good guy. I loved that he was more of a backseat kind of character but that he came in with his obsession with the Aurora to try and help the crew figure out the mystery behind the disappearance of the ship. The four of them worked so well together and I really did grow to love them in a short amount of time.

I’m going out on a limb and saying that the Aurora is also a character itself. Sure, it’s essentially a dead ship that vanished twenty years ago and is definitely most certainly not alive at all, but it has so much about it that really, well,  brings it to life. There are some truly spooky scenes on the Aurora and it gives you the feeling that there is so much more to the ship and what happened twenty years ago than you initially read about. It has a uniquely terrifying personality and really feels like it’s the main character of the story, not Claire. And, dare I say it, I loved this creepy-ass ship so much. The dark hallways, ornate decor, bloody handprints on the wall…wait a second, blood?! Anyway, the Aurora really does shine as a character and I loved uncovering the mystery behind the luxury space liner and all of its ghostly inhabitants!

Writing:
Oh man, my favorite part of this book was definitely the writing. Sure, Dead Silence has a great plot and awesome characters, but all of that would fall flat if the writing wasn’t any good. S.A. Barnes does a fantastic job at creating a constantly looming sense of dread on every page of this book, even when you don’t think there’s anything dreadful going on. She expertly weaves mystery, horror, and even a bit of occasional humor together to create an unforgettable reading experience. You can genuinely feel Claire’s pain at losing her job, her trauma from her past, the terror on the Aurora, and every bump or creak that happens off in the distance. Dead Silence is pure atmospheric horror gold, plain and simple. There were so many instances where I panicked because I was so sure that something was creeping in the corner of my room while I was reading and as someone who is not easy to spook anymore, that's the sign of a successful horror book in my opinion.

"But I will say this: once you've been in a position to watch everyone you've ever known die, the light go slowly out of their eyes, transforming them from this magic assemblage of quirks, habits, preferences, and dreams to an inert pile of spent flesh and bone, you realize not only that life is precious but also that death is absolutely inevitable. No matter what you do. The people you love will die one day, and sometimes it happens sooner and faster and more horribly than you could imagine. Sometimes it's even your fault."

Silence has a different quality to it when you’re the only one left alive.“

“Not exactly the luxury cruise you were expecting?” I call over my shoulder. “No, but the last luxury cruise didn’t work out too well, either,” he points out.

I can confidently say that Dead Silence is one of my new favorite horror books. It combines everything I love into one terrifying story and it was exactly what I was hoping it would be. With a fear-inducing plot, twists and turns that will have you jumping at every noise you hear, and characters that will pull you into their horrific story and not let you go until the final page, Dead Silence is the answer to all of your sci-fi horror desires.
