Blogtober 2022 Day 19: American Horror Story Book Tag

12:00:00 PM

Hi hello ghouls and goblins and welcome to Blogtober day 19! Today, I'll be doing the American Horror Story Book Tag created by Novel Lives. This tag looks super fun but it does only go up to season 9, which is 1984, so I'm adding on the most recent season and newest season which are Double Feature and NYC! I've been watching since Murder House debuted in 2011 and while every season may not be a winner, I can definitely say this is one of my favorite horror TV shows that I've ever watched. It's spooky, spicy, and can be seriously confusing at times and I love the weirdness that is always assured to be a part of every season. Let's get spooky!
___________________________________________________________________________

Season 1 : Murder House
A book with a haunted house

No matter how gruesome or horrible the murder, you can always find someone who'll buy the house.”

Man, Fuck This House by Brian Asman. Remember that film from 2006, Monster House? Okay good, now remember the ending when the house runs around? That’s this book. This was a middle-of-the-road read for me but there were a few things that made me laugh and that visual was one of them. Damien was the other, that precious demon child. Was this a perfect book? Not in my opinion. But is it a fun and quick read you should pick up for the Halloween season? Yeah, I think so.

Season 2: Asylum
A book where someone was possessed

All monsters are human. You're a monster.”

Come Closer by Sara Gran is an absolutely wild ride! I had such a good time reading it and I loved how you weren’t really sure if she was being possessed or was just crazy. There were some pretty cool visuals throughout and I really enjoyed the progression of the possession as the book progressed. This is definitely one of the more memorable stories like this that I’ve read!

Season 3: Coven
A book with witches

“BALENCIAGA!”

Lenora from The Demon’s Bargain by Katee Robert is a pretty powerful witch! I absolutely devoured this novella and I am dying to read more about Lenora and Ramanu, oh my gosh. I’m obsessed with pretty much everything Katee Robert writes at this point so I’m not surprised I loved this as much as I did. I will absolutely be picking up the other books in the Deal with a Demon series very soon!

Season 4: Freak Show
A book with a circus/carnival

You see, we are a troupe of entertainers. A family. And you will not split up our family.”

I’ve been wanting to read this series again so it seems like a good time to talk about it! Piece of Dragon by Laurel Chase is the start of the Haret Chronicles, which is one of my favorite RH series ever. Funny story, I actually did a release day blitz post for Piece of Shifter back in 2018 and then somehow completely forgot about the series. Flash forward to December 2019 and I picked up the first book and finished six of the seven books in 11 days. I accidentally discovered the genre at the start of 2019 and, well, here I am now. But this series has a creepy carnival and a character called The Ringmaster and there’s a whole plot line about it. 100/10 would recommend, especially if you like reverse harem series!

Season 5: Hotel
A book with vampires

“It is a horrible feeling to have a craving that you can never satiate.”

Phew, I almost went an entire book tag without mentioning Charlie Nottingham! That was a close one, huh? Raven’s Song by Charlie Nottingham has the wonderfully sweet and spicy Ezra the vampire! I absolutely love his character and his relationship with Rain. This is the sequel to Raven’s Cry in which we first meet Ezra, but obviously, with the sequel, you’ll get to learn more about the characters and such. I adore learning more about Rain and her partners in this series and I am eagerly awaiting Raven’s Reckoning because I know it’s going to be an insanely exciting read!

Season 6: Roanoke
A horror book that is also a period piece

“I am the Queen of every hive. I am the fire on every hill. I am the shield over every head. I am the spear of battle. Who but I am both the tree and the lightning that strikes it?”

What Moves the Dead by T. Kingfisher feels like it was a period piece although I genuinely cannot remember. But let’s go with it! This was 176 pages of creepy crawly feels and while I still have no idea what I read, I know I enjoyed reading it and that’s all I really care about. This definitely made me more interested in checking out other books by T. Kingfisher because if I enjoyed this, I know I’ll enjoy her other books. I still feel like I need to brush my teeth a million times just looking at this cover.

Season 7: Cult
A horror book with a message

“Isn’t it sad when a strong woman scares people more than clowns?”

I think Just Like Mother by Anne Heltzel is a fitting choice for this prompt because it’s a book about a cult. This is one of my favorite books of 2022 and I think it can definitely have a message. As someone who is also childless by choice, I really related to Maeve and her decision to just live her life without having to worry about a tiny human that relies on her to live. That wasn’t for her and it’s not for me. But this book is so realistic in that society expects those who are able to give birth, to give birth. And if you don’t want to? Well, don’t worry, you’ll change your mind! Being childless by choice isn’t a bad thing and it honestly feels like motherhood can be a cult of sorts; especially when there are those who believe that that’s all that women are good for. If I had to say what I thought the message from this book could be, I’d say something along the lines of “Living the life you want to live isn’t a bad thing. Do what makes you happy and don’t let others (or society) pressure you into doing something that you don’t want to do.” Highly recommend this if you want a creepily realistic cult book!

Season 8: Apocalypse
A dystopian book

“Satan has one son…but my sisters are legion, motherfucker.”

Doesn’t this book have an absolutely stunning cover?! Mindwalker by Kate Dylan is on my list of books I want to read before the end of the year and I’m so excited to get to it soon, oh my gosh. Not only is the cover beautiful, but the story sounds like an awesome science fiction/dystopian read and I haven’t read one of those in a very long time.

Season 9: 1984
A horror book from/set in the 1980s

“You don’t have to fear the worst when it’s already happened.”

My Best Friend's Exorcism by Grady Hendrix has been on my TBR for ages and I want to read it even more now after seeing the film adaptation, which I really enjoyed. It has such a great aesthetic and I mean, look at that cover! I know I'll like the book since I enjoyed the adaptation and I'm really excited to get around to it soon.

Season 10: Double Feature

A spooky collection of short stories

“There is nothing more tragic, pathetic, and sad than a person with no talent trying to make it in the world.”

Everything's Eventual by Stephen King is one of my favorite short story collections! It has 1408 in it, which happens to be my favorite adaptation of one of King's stories. I remember being obsessed with this book cover when I was younger and having to wait to read it until I was a bit older. But something about it has just stuck with me all these years and I still love it to this day.

Season 11: NYC
A horror book set in New York City

So somehow, I had no idea that The Midnight Meat Train was a short story written by Clive Barker. It's a film about a photographer who crosses paths with a serial killer who kills late-night commuters on a train. That's a very basic premise but I don't want to risk giving away too much if you haven't seen it yet because it's a great film! But apparently, it was originally a short story in Books of Blood by Clive Barker, so it's really cool that I've learned something new!

And that does it for the American Horror Story Book Tag! I really love this TV series, even if some of the seasons aren't the best. I'm excited about NYC but honestly, I have no idea what it's about and didn't even know there was going to be a new season until maybe a few weeks ago. But I'm always ready for more AHS and I can't wait to see how it connects to all of the previous seasons. If I had to pick a favorite, it would probably be Roanoke, despite the ending being lackluster. And my least favorite season is 1984. I'd love to know what your favorite and least favorite seasons of American Horror Story are so leave me a comment below and let me know! Tomorrow is day 20 and it's Sora's Name Day so come back for some super cute corgi content. Thanks for stopping by and I'll scare ya later!
